I finished removing all the tonebar/tine assemblies from the harp this afternoon, finding a broken tine in the process: The condition forced my hand to begin a full restore, and I'llВ ultimatelyВ have a better piano. If it had been playable, I would have beenВ satisfiedВ with it and not put any further work into restoring it. To say I wasn'tВ disappointedВ with the condition would be a lie, but IвЂ™ve come toВ appreciateВ that piano wasnвЂ™t in playing condition uponВ receivingВ it. I quickly removed the harp lid and saw the extensive damage. This was the first indication I had that all was not right with this piano. My heart sank when, after removing the shipping material and the cover, IВ noticedВ a key that was lower than the rest. The real hero of this project has to be theВ generic cordless rotary tool I picked up at theВ beginningВ of the project. I just need to clean the rust off of them. Fortunately, my father was able to weld it for me: I ordered a new one on ebay itвЂ™s in and ready to go. While I was cleaning the hammers, I found another broken hammer it was beyond repair: IвЂ™ve been cleaning the glue off of the hammers to prepare them for new hammer tips: I also cleaned up the RCA jack/mount on the pickup rail: I wired up the pickups and heard some of the first sounds out of the piano. I believe that the piano shipped with a prototype short magnet pickup as pickups went bad in the piano, they were replaced with whatever wasВ available.В Fortunately, the blend of pickups shouldnвЂ™t affect the tone of the piano too much. I discovered that thereвЂ™s an odd blend of pickups in my piano. I received my rewoundВ pickups from Smith Piano Servicing, so IвЂ™ve beenВ rewiringВ the pickups. I managed to not burn myself too badly quite a feat considering how much soldering IвЂ™ve been doing this week.
